Rambouillet vs. Merino Wool

Rambouillet vs. Merino Wool

When it comes to premium wool, Merino often gets the spotlight - but there’s another elite contender: Rambouillet wool. Originating in France and bred for superior softness, elasticity, and durability, Rambouillet wool outperforms Merino in many ways. Let’s dive into the history and qualities that make it the ultimate choice.

The Origins of Rambouillet Wool

The Rambouillet breed was developed in 1786, when King Louis XVI of France purchased over 300 Spanish Merino sheep from his cousin, King Charles III of Spain. These sheep were placed on an experimental royal farm, the Bergerie Royale (now Bergerie Nationale) in Rambouillet, France, about 50 km southwest of Paris.

Unlike traditional Merino, Rambouillet sheep were selectively bred over generations, incorporating English long-wool genetics to enhance their size, wool quality, and resilience. By the 19th century, Rambouillet sheep had grown significantly larger than their Spanish ancestors, with:

  • Ewes reaching up to 200 lbs
  • Rams reaching up to 300 lbs
  • Wool length exceeding 3 inches (80mm)

The result? A denser, softer, and more durable wool that retains all the benefits of Merino - but takes them to the next level.

What’s the difference?
